Argyrotype print of a shell

Argyrotype Printing

Duration: One-day workshop
Dates: Sun 22 Sep 2024 10:30 - 17:30
Location: Print Studio

Create atmospheric Van Dyke Brown tinted prints using an early photographic process.

The day will start with a brief discussion of early photographic history and process followed by a demonstration of the process. You'll then learn the different stages, including preparing an image from a photograph or negative, coating of paper with argyrotype solution, using an ultra violet light box to make a contact print on to the coated paper and developing, washing and drying.

You can use objects or photographs: send in up to four photos in advance so we can prepare negatives.

Need to know

  • What to bring

Please supply a range of photographs before the course. These will be used to create a digital negative for you by scanning them. Some images work better than others so we need a few to choose from - your photographs will not be harmed by this process and will be returned intact.

Please email or hand in up to four good quality images one week before the course. Images can be handed into DCA Print Studio or emailed to printstudio@dca.org.uk.

  • What to wear

We'll provide aprons and gloves but recommend wearing old cloths as printmaking can be messy. Please note that open-toed footwear and sandals are not allowed in our Print Studio.

  • Food & drinks

A sealed water flask or drinking vessel is permitted but other food and drinks are not allowed in the studio.
