Point Break
Get set for the heart-pounding, adrenaline-soaked, explosive new film season Art of Action. Part of BFI's Art of Action, a UK-wide film season celebrating high-octane cinema, we're bringing a wide-ranging selection of the best-ever action titles to our screens, each including an expert introduction.
Enjoy any three films from this season (excluding Kubo and the Two Strings, which is Donate What You Can) for the special price of £24 when you book them at the same time. Simply select your tickets and the discount will be applied automatically at the checkout.
This screening will feature a subtitled recorded introduction by Deborah Jermyn, author of Hollywood Transgressor: The Cinema of Kathryn Bigelow and Associate Professor of Film at the University of Roehampton.
Keanu Reeves is Johnny Utah, an undercover FBI agent on the trail of Patrick Swayze’s gang of surfing bank robbers in Kathryn Bigelow’s deliriously entertaining 1991 film Point Break.
Bigelow would eventually earn the Best Director Oscar for her 2008 film The Hurt Locker, but she has always been a remarkably assured and stylish director, and Point Break saw her take her film-making to new heights, both figuratively and literally with the film’s death-defying skydiving scenes. Patrick Swayze ended up making 55 jumps in the process of making the film and cracked four ribs shooting the surfing sequences, while Keanu Reeves, who had never surfed before, enjoyed it so much that he took the sport up as a hobby.
Despite being a bonafide cult classic, allegedly inspiring the original The Fast and the Furious film and being referenced in the likes of Hot Fuzz and The Avengers, the film has rarely been seen on UK cinema screens since its release, so we are thrilled to present it in a brand new 4K restoration.
