Warner Brothers’ 1938 take on Robin Hood might just be the best and most iconic film adaptation of the legend to this day. Resplendent in dazzling, brand-new technicolour (a year before The Wizard of Oz) this film set the template for big-budget, swashbuckling blockbusters for decades to come.
Errol Flynn plays Robin with the right combination of steely determination and mischievous devil-may-care attitude, the legendary folk hero and his Merry Men delighting in doing all they can to make Basil Rathbone’s villainous Sir Guy of Gisbourne’s life more difficult. Olivia de Havilland plays Maid Marian, and her chemistry with Flynn makes the character more than just a damsel in distress.
The film not only features all the robbing from the rich to give to the poor that you could hope for, but also features thrilling, daredevil action sequences. From Robin and Guy’s climactic sword duel to the famous, often-recreated scene where Robin fires an arrow with such pin-point accuracy that it splits an arrow already planted in the bullseye of a target – an image so iconic and enthralling that to this day this stunt is still known as ‘Robin Hood-ing’ an arrow.
