Japanese Woodblock Printing

Step back in time into the intriguing world of Japan’s Edo Period, and gain an insight into the mysteries of ‘Ukiyo-e’ woodblock prints.

The course starts with an introduction into the history of Japanese woodblock printing and culture. The tutor will discuss the different materials and equipment used and show examples of both ukiyo-e prints and works using the techniques in a more contemporary way.

You will learn how to prepare your woodblock and make a design for your print using a traditional brush. You will then transfer your design onto the wood and learn how to utilise the Japanese cutting tools when carving your block. Cutting down handmade Japanese paper and dampening it overnight prepares it for the exciting process of inking up your block on the second day with water-based pigments in order to create beautiful, colour woodblock prints. No press is required, but instead a baren (a hand burnishing pad) is used to burnish the paper against the surface of the inked block.
