Steve McQueen is back with Blitz, showing now at DCA Cinema. After an early career as a Turner Prize-winning video artist, McQueen went on to direct Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Widows, the TV anthology Small Axe and more. Among a slew of awards, he was the first Black filmmaker to win an Academy Award in 2014.
Of Blitz, he has said "I think my movie — not to sound corny — it’s about love. That’s the only thing worth living for, and it’s only thing worth dying for. Nothing else. That’s what I wanted to illuminate."
Following Cannes Film Festival award-winner American Honey and the compelling 2021 documentary Cow, Andrea Arnold, makes a welcome return with Bird, a tender, striking and surprising coming-of-age fable starring Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Franz Rogowski (Passages), and newcomer Nykiya Adams.
For Bird, Arnold wanted to look at the experience of a teenager being raised by a young single father fixated on a bizarre money making scheme. "How do you navigate when you’re in the world where everything around you is so completely chaotic? How do you do that?" – there's more insight into her filmmaking process in this fantastic interview with Little White Lies.
We end November with the latest feature from Ridley Scott, legendary director of dozens of blockbuster hits including Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, Prometheus and last year's Napoleon.
Now, Scott brings us the long-awaited sequel to the Oscar-winning Gladiator, Gladiator II. This new film continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome and stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. As he recently told Empire, "It’s the best thing I’ve ever made…"
Plus, coming soon we've got films from acclaimed international directors, including Queer, from Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name); Nosferatu, from Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse), and Mickey 17, from Bong Joon Ho (Parasite).
