Introducing Dundead IPA with Holy Goat
We've partnered with local brewery Holy Goat for a limited-edition beer.
Here at DCA we've been brewing up something special for the thirteenth Dundead! At this year's festival, audiences will be able to get a taste of Dundead with a limited-edition beer that’s been created by local brewery Holy Goat.
Based in Dundee, Holy Goat specialise in the production of mixed-fermentation and wood aged beers. Inspired by the vintage Italian horror titles in this year’s retrospective strand, they've crafted a west coast IPA with a haunting blend of citrus and pine and a nice lingering bitterness. The can features our 2025 festival design, created by Dundee-based illustrator Katriona Gillon.
Dundead IPA is available to order from Holy Goat from Tue 8 April and will on tap in Jute Café Bar during the festival, from Thu 8 to Sun 11 May. We chatted to Holy Goat Co-Founder James Scanlan about the brewery, the beer and horror films...

We're so excited to be partnering with Holy Goat for Dundead IPA, can you tell us a bit more about Holy Goat and how it started?
Likewise! We're very happy to be a part of Dundead this year.
Holy Goat began four and a half years ago in Dundee, started by Johnny Horn and myself. Johnny was looking to start a new brewery after moving on from another brewery he co-founded called Vault City. I had complementary skills from founding a games studio and a career in media. From the outset there was a strong idea for the branding, with an emphasis on illustration and themes taken primarily from heavy music genres like Doom Metal and Sludge.
Likewise with the beer styles there was a clear direction from the start, as Johnny was keen to centre production around an unusually long fermentation process that gives the beers a distinct full-flavoured fruity character. Over the last year or two we’ve started to diversify our range, still mainly producing fruited sours but now with regular stout beers and IPAs. The core music aesthetic and focus on making high quality beers will always be at the heart of what we do.

What can people expect from Dundead IPA?
It’s our first West Coast IPA so we wanted to be true to the style. The beer has a nice amount of bitterness with big hop-driven flavours. It has a lot of pine and citrusy notes too. We are really happy with it and find it very refreshing. Hopefully everyone gets a chance to try the beer and enjoys it.

The design of Holy Goat cans and merch is very in keeping with Dundead and our horror aesthetics - what's involved in creating these?
There's a long history of metal bands taking inspiration from macabre imagery ,where album artwork can often look like horror movie posters. The mutual fascination in horror and heavy music with themes of gore and darkness gives us plenty to explore.
We were lucky to work with a talented artist called Jimbob Isaac from the beginning who helped get the visual identity heading in the right direction. I initially focussed on the graphic design, making sure everything was consistent, thematic and showcased the illustrations well. Over time I started to do more of the illustrations myself and I now do the majority of them, although it's also a great platform to showcase amazing artists so I like to get others involved wherever possible.
There is typically a simple jumping off point, maybe the name of a band or song that leads to a solid idea. There are usually three or four new labels every month so a lot to work with consistently. A good example would be a beer we did called Holy Mountain, as that illustration was directly inspired by Alejandro Jodorowsky’s film of the same name (a film that I first saw in the DCA as it happens).

What's your relationship with horror films - are you a fan?
I’m a big fan of horror films, especially classics such as The Thing. I’ve always enjoyed old Italian horror too, as I’m really into the aesthetic and soundtracks from this era, particularly Lucio Fulci’s work.
What would be your top pick from this year's Dundead festival?
For me Zombie Flesh Eaters as it’s by Lucio Fulci although Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) is another great pick and well worth seeing.
A big thank you to Holy Goat for creating Dundead IPA for us and to James for answering all our burning questions.
The beer will be available from Holy Goat's website for a limited time - grab your can quick! It will also be on tap at Jute Café Bar during the festival from Thu 8 - Sun 11 May. If you haven't got your tickets yet, click below to find out more info and book.
I’m really happy to be partnering with Holy Goat Brewing for our exclusive Dundead beer. Dundee’s identity is such a vital part of what makes Dundead successful, so I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to work with an innovative and exciting brewery that’s just a stone’s throw from DCA. I can’t wait to raise a glass of Dundead IPA with everyone at the festival!”Michael Coull Dundead Programmer
