Why we love… director Bong Joon-ho

Get excited for Mickey 17 at DCA!

We're so excited for the next film by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, Mickey 17, that we're bringing his Oscar-winning 2019 thriller Parasite back to our screens in a stunning black and white 4K edition.

What makes Director Bong's films so special? We asked film fans from the DCA team to share their thoughts…

A black-and-white film still shows four people sitting on the floor, packing pizza boxes.

Parasite was a phenomenon when it came out – I was managing a cinema down in Northumberland at the time and audiences flocked to see it in a fashion I hadn’t seen before for a film not in the English language. As someone whose job it is to introduce people to amazing films from all over the world, a quote from Bong Joon-ho’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes (below) resonated with me a lot. We’re bringing it back to the big screen – and this time in sumptuous monochrome black and white – to celebrate the release of Mickey 17, and I’m buzzing to be able to introduce it to a new wave of cinema goers.

Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.'

When Parasite arrived, it rode a wave of excitement building with each new festival performance. Breaking the ceiling for what audiences could expect from an international film, it was film that had built a fever of anticipation. Oscar triumph followed. Bong is back for Mickey 17 - teaming with Robert Pattinson. A seemingly perfect match. A new cinematic treat for the world of 2025.

Simon, Cinema Manager

Bong Joon-ho is a master of social storytelling with complex character building and family networks that feel really lived in. I thought the mutant tardigrades from the Mickey 17 trailer were a madcap departure from his slow-burn murder mysteries- then remembered he also directed The Host, Snowpiercer, and Ojka. We love a director that can do it all.

Memories of Murder still – two Korean detectives hold.a photo of a murder victim up to the camera

I watched Memories of Murder for the first time last year and was really stunned by it. It's an incredibly dark exploration of police incompetence in the face of evil, based on a real-life case and shot through with Bong Joon-ho's distinctive sense of humour.

Jess, Deputy Director

I love a sci-fi story that retains a sense of humour, and the trailer for Mickey 17 is wild – I can't wait!
